On October 13-14, 2022, Typhoon “SONCA” hit the central region of Vietnam, causing severe damage to low-lying areas, including Da Nang City, which was hit by storms and heavy rains. In particular, Da Nang City suffered from unprecedented flooding due to the storm surges and guerrilla rains that caused the drainage system to malfunction. Although the provinces surrounding Da Nang City did not suffer severe damages, experienced landslides in many places.

Damage situation

More than 4,000 households in central Da Nang City were inundated, and over 200,000 households lost power. The northern and western areas of Da Nang City were particularly hard hit, with floodwaters quickly rising to over two meters in some places in a short period of time. The transportation network was disrupted, and many people had difficulty returning home. There were also many landslides and damaged houses, especially in the western part of the City. After the typhoon passed and the waters receded, roads in Da Nang City were severely damaged and overflowed with thousands of abandoned vehicles.

FIDR's Response

FIDR received a request for assistance from the Da Nang City Department of Foreign Affairs and the Da Nang Charity Center, and proceeded to conduct a detailed investigation.

The survey revealed that the children's learning environment was severely damaged, and that little support was delivered for them so far. Therefore, FIDR decided to provide food and school supplies to the homes of the severely affected children, as well as necessary learning materials to schools and preschools.

Starting in late October, FIDR visited target schools (preschools) in turn and distribute relief supplies. (in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Da Nang City and the Da Nang Charity Association and Child Right Protection Association)
