Is poverty in Asia improving?

Compared to 1990, when FIDR began its operations, Asian countries have greatly increased their economic power. The countries FIDR has been engaged in --Nepal, Cambodia, and Vietnam-- are also experiencing steady growth.
However, these countries still rank low in the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Disparities between countries will not be easily resolved, and within each country, these disparities have become more severe in recent years. The voices of those at the bottom of the disparity structure are hardly heard.

Capturing the issues to tackle in the field

FIDR is in close proximity to those who wish to improve their situation but are unable to do so on their own, actively listening to their voices.

  • “I feel sorry for my children, but I have no choice but to give up on their secondary schooling and make them get a job.”
  • “When we get sick or injured, there is no hospital nearby that we can rely on.”
  • “I want to stay with my family, but have to go abroad to work as I cannot make a living from farming.”
  • “In the city, they send their children to fine private schools, but in our village, we have no choice but to send them to public schools with old buildings and few teaching materials.”
  • “It has been difficult to get sufficient water in our old village recently. We do not know what to do with this problem.”

These are just a few examples of the many voices we hear.
Difficult conditions stand in the way of making a living, engaging in work, and having hope for the future. The reality on the ground is that these challenges are multi-layered. and there is no single solution.
FIDR does not focus on a specific theme; instead, we implement projects across various sectors by understanding local situations from multiple perspectives.
So far, FIDR has been addressing with the following themes.

Issues We Work on

    Health and Hygiene

We disseminate knowledge to improve behaviors for preventing and treating disease as well as injury so that people can promote their own health in their daily lives. FIDR improves sanitation in homes and communities, and develop the capacity of health professionals.

    Nutrition

Health depends greatly on the nutrition we consume in our daily diet. We aim to develop human resources and improve the environment to widely disseminate knowledge of what foods and how much to eat and how to put this knowledge into practice.

    Agriculture

Many people living in rural areas are engaged in agriculture. In developing countries, however, there are many farmers who do not have enough harvest for their own consumption or enough productivity to support their households. We promote effective agricultural methods and facilities that enable high productivity at low cost.

    Nutrition Education

    Education

To ensure that school-aged children receive a quality education at school, we improve facilities and teaching materials as well as the teaching skills of teachers. Yet, the benefit of education is not limited to children. It serves a vital function in addressing current problems, such as adult literacy, basic business management skills, and knowledge of health.

    Industrial Development

By developing products that take advantage of local resources and traditional culture, and by establishing distribution channels with the outside world, we aim to revitalize stagnant communities and achieve sustainable growth. Creating a system that allows the younger generation to take active roles in the village will help prevent depopulation and preserve the local culture.
