Activity Summary

In early November 2017, Typhoon Damrey hit central area of Vietnam. The death toll exceeded 100, and more than 110,000 houses were damaged.

FIDR Vietnam office located in Danang city was safe, but Hoa Vang district which located in the west of Da Nang was flooded and more than 10,000 houses were damaged by flooding. In addition, Nam Tra My district of Quang Nam province, one of our project sites, was also severely damaged. Not only roads and water pipe but also paddy field were washed away, and people lost their livelihood. Due to the risk of further landslides, the residents in two villages were forced to relocate to other areas. It was critical to supply the necessary materials such as sanitary goods and take proper hygiene measures for evacuees.

In response to the request from local government, FIDR distributed sanitary kits for evacuees and implemented hygiene awareness activities. Moreover, blankets were distributed to all the residents of one village who had to be relocated due to the landslide (about 200 households). Materials for setting up temporary houses were also provided to poor households.

Danang City: 45 schools (including elementary schools and junior high schools) in Hoa Phong commune and Hoa Cuong commune, Hoa Vang district
Quang Nam Province: Tra Nam commune, Tra Vinh commune and Tra Vân commune, Nam Tra My District
