Catu Traditional Handicraft Assistance Project

Zara village and neighboring villages, Tabhing commune*, Nam Giang district, Quang Nam province

Project Background

 Handicraft activities have been implemented as one component of Nam Giang Community Development Project (FY2001-FY2007) for income generation of Catu women in Zara village. During the project, the Catu women significantly improved their weaving skills and became able to produce new types of handicraft through the promotion of its traditional bead motif. These handcraft products were started to be sold at souvenir shops in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and Hoi An which is a famed tourist spot. At the same time, the Catu women gained confidence in them.

 Due to the lack of production capacity, however, neither the quality nor the quantity of the products were not stable.

Project Purpose

 To promote traditional weaving handicraft, and Catu women will be able to earn stable income.

Beneficiaries

・ Catu women living in Zara village and neighboring villages: approximately 100
・ Family members of Catu women: approximately 120

Main Activities

1. Setting up management team and conduct study tours and trainings
2. Providing trainings to weaving group members, with specific focus on how to improve the quality and quantity of the handicraft production
3. Providing trainings on basic marketing knowledge and skills
4. Attending bazaars and introducing Catu handicraft products
