Sri Lanka

@Sri Lanka is intricately interwoven with ethnic groups, religions and the problem of social stratification. Since the 1980's, more than 60,000 people have been killed as a result of fierce conflict between the Government of Sri Lanka, the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), and other guerrilla groups. In February of 2002, a Ceasefire Agreement was signed. Even though reconstruction was addressed, a massive tsunami caused by the earthquake off Sumatra in late 2004 struck many costal areas. Sri Lanka therefore still needs ongoing assistance with reconstruction efforts.
@FIDR believes that creating an environment where people have access to welfare, including healthcare and medical services, can be a basis for peace. FIDR started the reconstruction of a hospita‚Œ that was destroyed during the conflict.
