The local people were extremely pleased

From December 18th to 21st, FIDR staffs in Vietnam office went to Nam Tra My District of Quang Nam Province then started distributing soaps to 1800 households in Tra Vinh village, Tra Nam village, Tra Van village and blankets to 200 households in Tra Vinh village.

It is rainy season and temperature gets down with rain in Vietnam during this period. However, it is severely cold particularly in this year and sometimes the temperature falls to below 10 degrees Celsius. Local people whose houses were destroyed by the typhoon had to use plastic sheets as a roof to avoid rainfall, wind and coldness. They were very glad when they received relief assistance and said “I can keep myself warm and sleep well thanks to this supply”

In parallel with relief assistance, FIDR has meetings with officers of Quang Nam province many times about any support activities in the future. While taking into account of the support of other groups and organization, FIDR plan to continue support activities to local people who are really in necessary situation.

Emergency response for the victims of typhoon in Vietnam

Mudslide site

In the beginning of November, typhoon No.23 had hit the central Vietnam just before APEC meeting was held in Da Nang City. Over 100 people died and more than one hundred and ten thousand of houses were destroyed due to the disaster. It kept raining even after the typhoon passed the area, which has caused the expansion of damage and delay of recovery.

FIDR office in Vietnam was intact after the disaster. However, there was a flood in Hoa Vang district located in the west of Da Nang City which caused the damage to about ten thousand of houses in the area. There is a concern that bad sanitary condition would be deteriorated and infectious disease would spread in this area.

In addition, landslides occurred several times in the mountainous regions. In Nam Tra My district, one of the areas that FIDR has been conducting a project on food security improvement, people suffered great damages. Not only lifelines such as roads and water supply, paddy fields which are residents’ base for living were swept away by the landslides as well. Due to the landslides could occur again, people of two hamlets were required to move to other areas. Even in these areas, ensuring enough necessary supplies and hygiene conditions for evacuees are some issues to be taken under consideration.

Receiving a request from the local government for the emergency assistance, FIDR decided to provide a support for victims in the affected areas. Our staffs in Vietnam office have started information collection, meeting with the government officers and procurement of relief supplies and delivery to the evacuees.

We will inform you about detailed condition in damaged area and our support activities in next report.
