Vegetable Seeds Distribution, 2nd Phase of Emergency Relief from FIDR to Flood-Affected Families in Kampong Chhnang Province(2012.01.27)

Responding to the request from the provincial government for assisting the post-flood rehabilitation, FIDR distributed vegetable seeds to 3,082 flood-affected families in Rolea Pair District, Kampong Chhnang Province on two consecutive dates, 19 and 20 January 2012.

This emergency assistance aimed to restore the livelihood of the vulnerable families in 33 villages affected by flood in Rolear Pa-ir District. Each family received a packet of eight kinds of vegetable seeds as shown in the list.

His Excellency Hy Nath, the Deputy Provincial Governor of Kampong Chhnang, complimented the supports by FIDR and Japanese donors who had been helping flood-affected people since the flood hit the province in September 2011.

He, as well, encouraged the farmers to grow the vegetables fruitfully. gWe expect to see the villages full of colorful vegetables when visiting here next time.h

Mrs. Korng San, 53 year old farmer of Pahi Village and mother of two children, who was in a lot of worries of her familyfs daily diet after the flood destroyed all her rainy-season rice, said that her 12 year old son would go to the neighboring village after school to collect rattan stems to support the familyfs income.

gMy child could earn about 2,000 riels from selling rattan. He keeps some money for his study and gives me some to support the family,h Mrs. San said.

Mrs. San said that she would plant the vegetable seeds received from FIDR near her house. gWhen the vegetables are grown, we will spend less to buy food.h

1,174 families in Chulkiri received aid for the first time(2011.11.10)

Chulkiri is one of the worst affected districts among the six flooded districts of Kampong Chhnang Province.

On 9 November 2011, FIDR Cambodia conducted emergency relief operation for 1,174 families living in two communes of Chulkiri District. Each family received a set of food: a 25kg bag of rice, canned fish (10 cans) and a box of instant noodle (50 small packets).

According to Mr. Yin Saven, Chulkiri District Governor, majority of the people in Chulkiri District were gravely affected by the current flood. gAmong the 5,828 affected families, 5,542 families were evacuated from their homes to elevated areas,h said Mr. Yin Saven.

The local authority reported the 1,174 flood-affected families in Chulkiri had never received any assistance; FIDR was the first aid organization that reached out to them.

Mr. Chuon Sarom, 61 years old, said he was happy to receive the relief goods for the first time since the flood hit his village last August, and expressed his appreciation to FIDR and the Japanese people. gThis relief aid will help my family go on till we could resume our cultivation.h

This flood is the most devastating in this decade in Cambodia.

FIDR Delivered Emergency Relief Aid to 2,538 Flood-affected Families in Kampong Chhnang Province(2011.11.7)

In response to the dire needs of flood-affected people in Kampong Chhnang Province, FIDR was engaged in its emergency relief operation to support food and safe water for 2,538 families in Rolea Pa-ir and Boribo Districts on 20 and 21 October 2011.

On the 20 October, relief aid packets were distributed to 1,033 families in Boribo District, and on 21 October, another 1,505 families in Rolir Pa-ir.

Each family received a 25kg bag of rice, 10 cans of canned fish, a box of noodle (50 packets) and ten water purification tablets.

The number of households that were affected by the flood in Kampong Chhnang Province was more than 11,000 families, about half of the provincefs population. Reportedly at least 11,736 hectares of agricultural lands were affected, and rice plants on more than 10,000 hectares of the land were damaged or totally destroyed.

Ms. Som Phan, 68 years old, whose house had been hit by the flood since August, said that her two hectare paddy field was already destroyed and she was happy to receive the relief aid items.

gWith this relief packet, Ifd bear with the flooding situation for some time more,h said Ms. Phan.

According to H.E. Touch Marim, the Governor of Kampong Chhnang Province, though the Cambodian Red Cross and the government were trying their best to help the flood victims, swift relief operations of NGOs and external agencies were highly effective to save the lives of the people in the widely inundated areas.

H.E Touch Marim were really thankful to FIDR and Japanese people for their generous aid and called them as gtrue friends.h

Until now, the floodwater level in Kampong Chhnang has not shown much change. There is also no clear assumption on how long the flood will last or when the farmers can resume their agricultural work. It is apprehended that the flood-affected people will confront food shortage for the coming year. FIDR keeps watching the development of the disaster and will provide further support where necessary.

2,538 relief packets were given to flood-affected families in two districts of Kampong Chhnang Province. Until then, almost none of them had received the relief aid since the area was hit by flood in August.




FIDR in Cambodia Delivers Relief to 2,538 AffectedFamilies in Kampong Chhnang Province(2011.10.20)

According to H.E Touch Marim, the Governor of Kampong Chhnang Province, there were 11,040 families affected by the current floodwater in the province. 19 people were dead, among those 11 were children. 11,736 hectares of agriculture lands are devastated.

So far 6,808 families have received relief aid from government, Cambodian Red Cross(CRC) and NGOs. However, there are still 4,132 families who have not received anything yet.

In response to the emergency need of affected people in Kampong Chhnang Province, the site of FIDRfs project, FIDR provides relief aid to 2,538 flood-affected families in Rolea Pa-ir and Boribo District.
FIDR in Cambodia cooperating with the provincial authorities and provincial CRC delivers emergency relief packets to the affected families for two days. Each relief packet consists of a 25kg bag of rice, a box of canned fish (ten cans), a box of noodle (50 small packets) and a safe water treatment tablet (10 pills).
